In a duplicate bridge competition, players will switch opponents periodically; after playing a few hands some (or all) pairs of partners will move around among the tables to face their new opponents. The hands are duplicated so that each hand is played many times over the course of the competition and players can see how others did holding the same cards.
If four players want to play only against each other, but would like to compare their results with others holding the same cards, they can stay at one table, called an appendix table, and share boards with (that is, play the same hands as) a nearby table from the competition. After playing a board, the results from all of the other times the board has been played so far are available on the traveler (a score slip that travels along with the board among the tables).
First you need three other players to fill out the table. Then you can come to any regular Friday night game and let the director know that you are forming an appendix table. The director will work out the details, and if desired, help you interpret the results. There is a $1 per person fee for playing at an appendix table, and no masterpoints are awarded for appendix tables.
