Training Programs
Service Delivery
Post-Doctoral Training:Services provided by CAPS fall into three main categories: clinical, outreach/consultation, and training. Post-doctoral activities within each area are outlined below.
Clinical Services
First Appointments (FA): A simultaneous process of evaluation and of beginning the referral or brief counseling/therapy process. Post-doctoral fellows provide four FA's each week. Students seen for an FA generally continue as clients with that therapist.
Ongoing Appointments: The philosophy and policy of CAPS is to provide brief therapy, but there is no set number of or limitations to follow-up appointments. Post-doctoral fellows (with supervisor consultation) learn to manage their client load to keep direct clinical service provision at approximately 60% of their work time.
Counselor on Duty (COD): Each post-doctoral fellow provides four hours weekly of crisis service, which includes walk-in clients and consultations to faculty, staff and concerned others. CAPS staff do not generally provide after-hours crisis interventions.
Groups: Post-doctoral fellows may facilitate one group each semester, depending on interest, agency need, and staff resources. Group facilitation may be with a social work or pre-doctoral psychology intern. Groups may be process oriented, semi-structured or psychoeducational in design. Groups currently offered at CAPS can be viewed on the CAPS Website.
Specialized Assessments: Post-doctoral fellows may provide assessments for substance use/abuse or eating and body image or learning disability concerns based on agency need and the post–doc interest and experience.
Outreach/Consultation
Crisis Outreach: Post-doctoral fellows may respond as needed to campus crises as part of a CAPS team (on occasion this occurs outside of standard work hours).
Outreach Presentations and Liaisons: Post-doctoral fellows respond to requests from the campus community, and/or develop and market programs to address clinical issues or meet community needs. Fellows may also join with a campus student group or clinical focus area to provide a variety of outreach services throughout the year. On occasion there may be additional opportunities to participate in system consultations conducted by specific staff members.
Training
Supervision: Post-docs will have the opportunity to provide individual clinical supervision as well as supervise intern group co–facilitators, depending on interest, agency need and staff resources.
Seminars: Opportunities are available for post-docs to present in a variety of intern seminars, depending on interest, agency need and experience.
