Post Doctoratal Fellowship
Service Delivery

Services provided by CAPS fall into three main categories: clinical, outreach/consultation, and training. Post-doc activities within each area are outlined below.

Clinical Services

First Appointments (FA): A simultaneous process of evaluation and starting the referral or brief counseling/therapy process. Post-Doc’s provide four FA’s each week. Students seen for an FA generally continue as clients with that therapist.

Ongoing Appointments: The philosophy and policy of CAPS is to provide brief therapy, but there is no set number of follow-up appointments. Post-Doc's (with supervisor consultation) and permanent staff learn to manage their client load to keep direct clinical service provision at approximately 50-60% of their work time.

Counselor on Duty (COD): Each Post-Doc provides three hours weekly of crisis service, which includes walk-in clients and consultations to faculty, staff and concerned others. The Post-Doc crisis shift will be 4-7 pm; however, CAPS staff members do not provide after-hours crisis coverage.

Groups: Post-Doc’s may facilitate one or two groups each semester, depending on interest, agency need, and staff resources. Generally the Post-Docs co-facilitate a group together for fall term. In later terms, group facilitation may be as a solo facilitator, or with a social work or pre-doctoral psychology intern. Groups may be process oriented, semi-structured or psychoeducational in design.

Clinical Workshops: Post-Docs generally provide one monthly workshop as part of the overall CAPS “drop-in” program. The topic would be based on Post-Doc preference and agency need.

Specialized Assessments: Post-Doc’s will provide provide multi-session screening protocols for substance use/abuse, eating and body image concerns, or ADHD based on agency need and the Post-Doc’s interest and experience.

Outreach/Consultation

Crisis Outreach: Post-Doc's may respond as needed to campus crisis as part of a CAPS team (on occasion this occurs outside of standard work hours).

Outreach Presentations and Liaisons: Post-Doc’s respond to requests from the campus community, and/or develop and market programs to address clinical issues or meet community needs. Post-Docs may also affiliate with a campus student group, or choose a clinical focus area, to provide a variety of outreach services throughout the year. On occasion there may be additional opportunities to participate in system consultations conducted by specific staff members.
