Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Professional Psychology

Our Post-Doctoral Fellowship is a twelve-month, renewable, full-time program (2000 hours) designed to provide advanced training and clinical experience in multiculturally sensitive services to university students with a wide range of developmental issues and mental health concerns.

Our training model is that of the "practitioner–scholar" offering hands–on experience complemented by access to and knowledge of relevant psycholocial science. Our goal is to support entry-level professionals as they get ready for licensure, and to prepare them to move with competence, creativity and flexibility into professional positions in a range of settings, with a focus on counseling centers.

The Post-Doctoral Fellowship program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). We offer at least one position for the academic year 2008–2009.

Examples of specialty area activities:

Training Administration could include such things as participating on the Training Committee and the Internship Selection Committee, website update/desig, supervision provision for the whole year, teaching a seminar, and helping prepare an accreditation report, etc.

Clinical Scholarship could include writing a dissertation based journal article, presenting at the Big Ten Counseling Center Conference, participating in the agency research team, improving the agency's outcome measures, or designing and conducting the agency's client satisfaction survey.

CAPS and the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan (http://www.umich.edu) is a campus of approximately 40,000 students, about one-third of whom are graduate and professional school students. CAPS (http://www.umich.edu/~caps) is centrally located on the third floor of the Michigan Union. Students of color comprise 25% of UM students and of clients who utilize CAPS services. Our multidisciplinary staff includes 20 professionals, 3 support staff, 3 pre-doctoral psychology interns, and 4 social work interns. We are a diverse staff with regard to race/ethnicity, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, age, professional discipline, theoretical orientations and intervention approaches. The International Association of Counseling Services accredits CAPS and APA accredits our pre-doctoral psychology internships. Our Post-Doctoral Fellowship program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).

Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor is a culturally diverse community with all the amenities of a large city in a small town setting. The University of Michigan and the city regularly attract nationally and internationally known speakers and performing artists. Ann Arbor is located just 30 minutes away from the Detroit Metropolitan International Airport. It is an hour from Windsor, Canada, and about four hours from Chicago (to the west) and Toronto (to the east). The Great Lakes and numerous inland lakes offer a plethora of recreational opportunities in a four-season climate.
