Training Programs
Psychology Practicum
CAPS provides practicum training in clinical and counseling psychology to graduate students from clinical or counseling psychology training programs. The practicum commitment ranges from 12 to 16 hours/week..
Given the fast-pace and brief therapy emphasis of our environment, CAPS strongly prefers students in a second clinical placement or beyond.
University of Michigan Clinical Psychology Placement
Fall or Winter Semester; 8-12 hours/weekActivities
- Orientation to CAPS and to crisis and short term interventions
- Co-therapy with staff and interns, and possibly solo, First Appointments
- Conducting brief counseling, psychotherapy, or crisis interventions
- Determining DSM-IV diagnoses
- Utilizing computerized clinical record system
- Providing referrals as appropriate
Learning Supports
- Individual supervision: 1 hr/wk
- Group supervision/seminar: 1 hr/wk
- Audio- or video-taping of client sessions
- Library of training videos
Clinical/Counseling Psychology Placement
September through April; 20 hours/weekActivities
- Orientation to CAPS; orientation to crisis and brief interventions
- Co-therapy with staff and interns for First Appointments
- First Appointments (solo)
- Brief counseling and psychotherapy
- Assessment and diagnosis
- Utilizing computerized clinical record system
- Providing referrals as appropriate
- Crisis or Group interventions
Learning Supports

- Clinical Topics Series
- Audio- or video-taping of client sessions

Application
Practicum applicants are expected to submit a statement of interest, a resume, and two references (from professionals who can speak to your educational and clinical experience.) On-site interviews may also be required.
