Longitudinal Studies
of Mental Health
Long-term studies have been important for
understanding the roots, course, and consequences of mental health
problems. At the University of Michigan there are over 40 studies
of mental health that cover different parts of the life span
from infancy into late adulthood. These studies have used a variety
of measures to assess personal characteristics and aspects of
the social environment that influence mental health.
The Center for Development and Mental Health
website is designed to facilitate the work of longitudinal researchers
in mental health. New investigators can be informed about measures
appropriate for different age groups and different personal and
social domains. Investigators with ongoing longitudinal studies
can be informed about appropriate measures for new waves of data
at later stages of development.
Studies are categorized according to the
Developmental Stages of the participants and the
Measures used. In addition, there is a special category
for studies of Interventions to change mental health.
Selected references and contact information are provided to obtain
