Diversity and Inclusion
Fostering diversity and inclusion has been an essential element of the Center’s work from our earliest days of breaking down barriers to women’s advancement. During the last several years, we have worked hard to educate the public about the potentially negative consequences for women and people of color of passage of Proposal 2, the anti-affirmative action amendment to the Michigan constitution. For more information, read CEW publications and the UM web site on diversity.
Read more about the recent history of anti-affirmative action ballot initiatives.
Following the passage of Proposal 2, CEW continues to contribute to efforts within the University to promote equal access and opportunity. We are the home of two organizations serving women of color and others on the University of Michigan campus.
The Women of Color in the Academy Project WOCAP) celebrates and highlights the contributions women of color make to the university and academic community. It also helps faculty and graduate students overcome institutional barriers, promotes their career advancement, and creates a supportive social network.
The Women of Color Task Force (WCTF) is open to all UM employees and focuses on professional development, including a major annual conference serving the campus and surrounding communities, and on promoting policies and practices that provide a positive and productive working environment.
CEW is active in Campus Women Lead an effort by women leaders in higher education to promote inclusive transformational excellence within academic communities through multicultural alliances.
