Counseling

The Center for the Education of Women assists hundreds of women and men each year as they make decisions about their futures. The comprehensive counseling program supports exploration of educational and career interests within the context of relationships and life circumstances.

What happens in a counseling appointment?

Our professionally trained and experienced counselors work within a developmental framework to help women and men consider their options, make informed choices, and both define and resolve problems, while focusing on issues of achieving balance between work and family responsibilities.

While there is no "typical" appointment, the list below can give you an idea of the concerns our participants tend to discuss in a counseling appointment at CEW.

-goals clarification

-feedback on resumes, cover letters, application materials, etc.

-how to start a job search

-educational goals

-how to return to college or graduate school

-work/life/family balance issues

What kinds of people utilize CEW’s counseling?

Our counseling services have been used effectively by all kinds of people – from executives to entrepreneurs, from faculty to non-traditional returning students, to community members experiencing mid-life transitions.

How do I make an appointment?

There is no charge for counseling appointments, which are available to anyone, whether affiliated with the University or not. To schedule an appointment, stop in at CEW or call 734.764.6360

Before your appointment

If you have already made an appointment, you may have been asked to complete a P-FORM . You may download the form, complete it, and bring it with you.  If you prefer to complete the form in our office, please plan to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

Parking near the Center

As some of you may have noticed, the Library lot, the closest public parking lot located near the Center, is closed for the next two years. Another convenient location is a surface lot directly west of the Ann Arbor Public Library. Rates are approximately $2.00 per hour. There is off-street parking near the Center and several parking garages in the Downtown area. Check this parking in Ann Arbor website for local parking garages and space available updated throughout the day.

Emergency Grants

Through our counseling program, the Center awards small emergency grants to graduate students and nontraditional undergraduates, including parents and returning students, who face serious and unexpected financial problems. To apply for a "critical difference" grant, call 734.764.6360 to make an appointment with a counselor.

After your appointment

There is no limit on the number of appointments you may have; you and the counselor will make that decision.  To support our counseling activities, CEW also maintains a library of current materials, many of which circulate, and offers numerous programs and events throughout the year on topics ranging from career and job issues to balancing work, life and family.
