Our mechanism involves the transformation from an alcohol to an alkene using aryl selenocyanate as a reagent. Since our reaction was not cited in the original paper, we searched for similar reactions in other journals.

How does our mechanism compare with that of other alcohol-to-alkene transformations?

Turns out, the use of ArSeCn along with Bu3P is a well-known and common method to convert a primary alcohol into an alkyl aryl selenide, which we do in step 2 of our reaction. ArSeCN can also be used to convert a carboxylic acid into selenol esters.
