CIBE was established at the University of Michigan Business School, now the Ross School of Business, in 1989 by University faculty as a multidisciplinary resource for teaching and learning about international business. They sought to introduce the concept of international-business education and to procure federal funds to support those educational efforts. CIBE receives its funding from the Department of Education, through a program created under the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 to enhance and promote international-business understanding. It joins a network of 31 centers at universities throughout the United States that serve as regional and national resources to business students and academics. |
Since its founding, the Center has launched new initiatives and extended its reach well beyond the University. In the last decade, CIBE has funded 100 research projects focusing on issues related to America's competitiveness in international-business markets. After Poland threw off its yoke of communism in 1989, CIBE spearheaded international internships by sending seven students overseas to help Polish businesspersons start new enterprises. As a resource center, CIBE supports researchers who study international-business issues and assists in disseminating new knowledge through business courses, executive-education seminars, conferences and refereed journals. |
CIBE also funds dual-degree scholarships, overseas study programs and multidisciplinary internships that enable students to experience foreign cultures, languages and work environments. Finally, the Center bridges the University and business community by providing expertise and resources to business leaders seeking to expand their operations globally. CIBE coaches students who wish to pursue dual degrees and careers in international business, and it collaborates with other universities to develop new educational opportunities. In addition, CIBE offers MBAs semester-long study abroad programs with partner Business Schools worldwide. For undergraduates in the BBA program, it offers the unique opportunity to enroll in the Summer BBA Program, and to study abroad at prestigious universities in Asia, Europe and Latin America. |
