Charles Clark (MBA/Public Policy) and Sarah Kanter (Law) completed U-M Labor Standards internships in Dhaka, Bangladesh in the summer of 2010. A detailed account of their experience and the history of the Labor Standards Committee can be found in the Winter 2010/2011 issue of International Connections, the newsletter of the Center for International and Comparative Studies
Jenny Chiu, BBA Student Some people say summer is a great time for gaining experience that we could not have in a classroom setting otherwise. With this in mind, I went to Sichuan, China for a 2-week teaching tour together with 9 college students from a diverse background, with the hope of creating an impact on local students who were severely affected by the earthquake. The students' curiosity to learn and their friendliness soon broke the cultural barrier between us, and such a close encounter is what makes this trip an amazing lifetime experience.
Mike Spadafore Often study-abroad programs are targeted at MBAs and other graduate-level students, so as an undergraduate, I felt I was part of an elite group. Overall, my experience in China was very beneficial and I’m glad I went.
Jonathan Bobb My participation in a CIBER-funded MAP microfinance project in spring 2006 opened my eyes to how business is done in developing countries. It was an amazing experience that had a great impact.
Shenika Watlington My most valuable takeaway from [my WHU] experience is the realization that in a global economy, you cannot use a blanket approach to doing business, because every country has a unique economic structure and culture.
Ken Lieberthal and Linda Lim It's naive to expect [China] to just follow U.S. policy just because it's a friend. I think we need to see things very much more from the Chinese point of view, an evolving point of view.
