Dual Degrees

Asia's growing prominence in international business opens up tremendous possibilities for U.S.-based and multinational companies and enterprising entrepreneurs. To maximize your potential, you need in-depth knowledge of an Asian country, proficiency in an Asian language, international-business skills and overseas work experience.

You can acquire those credentials by pursuing a dual degree through the Asia Business Program. This graduate-level program allows you to add a third year of intensive study and to graduate with both an MBA degree and a master's degree in Asian studies from one of four Asian national resource centers: Chinese, Japanese, South Asian and Southeast Asia.

Michigan is the only American university offering a dual degree focused on Southeast Asian studies. All the primary business languages of Asia are taught on campus, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Tagalog, Hindi and Tamil. The learning environment is enriched by faculty specialists who teach courses and conduct research on Asian-business topics. CIBE coordinates the Asian component of the dual-degree program and offers counseling and financial assistance. In addition, CIBE supports summer language study, Asia-based consulting projects and overseas internships and work placements. The Center also provides funding and organizational support for extra-curricular club activities, lectures and conferences.

If you are interested in a dual degree, you must apply separately to and be accepted by both degree programs. Completion of the Asia Business Program typically requires three academic years and two summers. You can leverage various curricular options, including working abroad, studying overseas at an Asian business school and taking up to four years of language courses.

Many dual-degree graduates have secured international job placements with General Electric, Procter & Gamble and United Technologies. Today they are working world-wide at locations in Tokyo, Bangkok and Shanghai as well as in the United States.
