Intensive courses in Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish.  

Off-campus Study: Domestic
A number of non-UM domestic programs offer intensive language study in an environment that fosters cultural and linguistic immersion. Two such programs are:

Summer Language Workshop in Slavic, East European and Central Asian Languages at Indiana University

Middlebury College Summer Language Schools
(Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish)

 


 

Study Abroad
Of course, true immersion is best achieved in the host country if possible, particularly on programs that offer a host-family living option.

The UM Center for Global Intercultural Studies (CGIS) offers 6-week summer immersion programs for Arabic, Chinese, French (Canada and France) Italian, Portuguese and Spanish (Spain, Costa Rica, Mexico ) among others.

The Department of Near Eastern Studies provides a list of alternative programs to consider.

The State Department's Critical Language Scholarship Program fund U.S. citizens to study languages critical to U.S. security at Summer Intensive Institutes overseas.
