What if I feel my placement is incorrect?

If, after classes begin, you feel that you have been placed into a course that is either too high or too low for your abilities, please contact Deborah Ross (dpross@umich.edu) as soon as possible. We want to make sure that you are placed at the right level, and will make every effort to get you into the appropriate course.

What about retroactive credits in Latin?

It is possible for LS&A students to earn up to a maximum of 8 retroactive credits for prior academic work completed in Latin. To earn these credits students must successfully (with a grade of B or better, not a B-) complete an upper-level course into which they were placed (by means of a placement test). A student who has placed out of the language requirement can earn 8 retroactive credits by receiving a grade of B or better in Latin 301 or a higher course. A student who needs only one more course to fulfill the language requirement, either Latin 232 or Latin 231, can earn 4 retroactive credits by completing this course with a grade of B or better. The course taken to earn retro-credits must be the first college course in the foreign language. Although there is no time limit on retro-credit, we strongly recommend that students complete coursework and apply for retro-credits within their first year of enrollment in LS&A. The Pass/Fail option disqualifies students from receiving the retroactive credit.

When should I begin taking my Latin classes?

As soon as possible!! We very strongly encourage students to elect Latin in the first semester after taking the placement exam (Fall for summer orientation students) and to continue with the language requirement sequence in subsequent semesters without interruption. We have found that students experience much more success in Latin if their study is continuous and without gaps beyond those of the summer months. Students who delay enrolling in Latin for more than one year after taking their placement exam may need another placement evaluation to determine the appropriate course.

Where can I get help with my Latin if I need it?

The Elementary Latin Program runs the Latin and Greek Study Center, a free, drop-in tutoring service for students in the elementary and intermediate courses in Latin and Ancient Greek. The Study Center is held in 2163 Angell Hall and staffed by Latin graduate student instructors and undergraduates majoring in Classics. The hours are posted on the door and will be announced in your classes, and usually begin during the first week of classes in the Fall term. There are also a variety of support materials for Latin courses available at the website for Elementary Latin: www.umich.edu/~classics/latin/index.html.

Where do I get information about a possible major or minor in Latin?

The Department of Classical Studies offers both a major in Latin or Classical Languages and Literature, and, starting this year, a minor in the Language, Literature, and Culture of Ancient Rome. For further information, contact our undergraduate program assistant Jacqueline Williams at 734-615-3181 or by email at jawllms@umich.edu. Please also check the department homepage: www.umich.edu/~classics/undergrad.
