Open Latin Faculty Position

The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan is authorized to make an appointment in Latin at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor.  The person appointed will be an active contributor to interdepartmental graduate programs in Greek and Roman History and in Classical Art and Archaeology.  We are looking for someone whose research interests lie in history—broadly defined—historiography, rhetoric, or religion, especially of the Republic. We welcome applications both from traditional philologists or historians and from scholars who apply contemporary interpretive methods to historical texts and issues. So expertise in ancillary disciplines, such as epigraphy and numismatics, is welcome, as is familiarity with relevant theory. We would be especially pleased to have candidates whose interests would provide bridges to other departments—not only History, but (for example) Women's Studies or Anthropology.  The department has recently hired specialists in Latin poetry and will not seriously consider applications from those whose research is on poetry, even if their work has a historical bent, or those who work on prose authors, but from a primarily philosophical perspective.

Faculty normally teach two courses each semester, and every faculty member normally teaches a mixture of language and classical civilization courses each year.  Teaching responsibilities will include teaching Latin courses, especially authors such as Cicero, Sallust, and Livy, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Courses may also be organized around themes or genres.  The candidate will also be expected to teach Greek at an advanced level, and may share in the rotations for the introductory undergraduate course in Roman Civilization and for the graduate survey of Latin Literature. The person appointed will be expected either to create a new Classical Civilization course that will enroll 50-100 students or to alternate in teaching an existing course in this category.  The survey of Roman history, however, is taught by the History Department and is not a responsibility of this position.

PhD must be completed by August 2009, but preference will be given to candidates whose dissertations are complete at the time of application.  Please send a dossier including a letter of application, at least three letters of recommendation, current CV, evidence of teaching experience, statement of current and future research plans, statement of teaching goals and experience, and a writing sample to the Latin Search Committee, Department of Classical Studies, University of Michigan, 2160 Angell Hall, 435 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1003, or as pdf to lsa-classics-search@umich.edu, by November 15, 2008.  Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The University is supportive of the needs of dual career couples.  The University of Michigan is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action employer.
