Honoring John D'Arms

Perhaps no single person so deeply influenced the modern form of the Classical Studies department as John D'Arms, who was a member of our faculty from 1965 until his retirement from Michigan in 1997. Since his untimely death in January 2002, the Department has been planning an event in honor of John.

The event is scheduled for this coming April. On the afternoon of Friday, April 5, Sue Alcock will deliver her inaugural lecture as the John H. D'Arms Collegiate Professor of Classical Archaeology and Classics. The following day we are mounting a small conference that will, in effect, chart the course of John's scholarly career through three papers. The subject of John's first book was Romans on the Bay of Naples; one of John's best known students, John Bodel of Brown University, will deliver a lecture related to this theme. Then William Harris of Columbia, John's old friend and colleague, will speak on a topic related to John's second book, Commerce and Social Standing in Ancient Rome. The final lecture, by Andrew Wallace-Hadrill of the British School in Rome, will take up themes addressed in John's subsequent articles. The day will be rounded out with a banquet.

For further details as the date of the conference approaches, see the Department's website. We particularly hope that John's former students will be able to attend.
