Classics
for a New Generation
Reaching out to Undergraduates
By Jacqueline Williams,
Undergraduate Administrator
That's right, Classics is making a comeback in a big way!
Thanks to new outreach efforts in the Department, students throughout
the College of LS&A are rediscovering the wonderful world
of Classical Studies! Over the past three years, the department
has developed some unique outreach initiatives designed specifically
to increase the awareness of Classical Studies among the undergraduates
of the University, in the community as a whole, and to reach
out to the next generation of Classics students.
Among
our outreach activities has been the development of Cornucopia:
Exploring the Humanities. An innovative event and the first of
its kind for the College, Cornucopia is a humanities outreach
effort for high school students in southeast Michigan to introduce
them to the unique opportunities available in the humanities.
We have broadened our academic advertising through a series of
Classics posters, new booklets, and vibrant displays at the LS&A
Concentration Fair (shown above). Further, we have been able
to revive our student club FACTIO and support their activities
and initiatives which this year includes: planning a trip to
the archaeological exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto,
movie nights, t-shirt fundraisers, and a Roman dinner party!
Additionally, we have created a Classics Reading room designed
specifically with undergraduates in mind. Our beautiful new room
fosters a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere where students may
go to study
or work on papers and features computer facilities, reference
and research books, a large study table, a decorative wall mural,
and comfortable lounge chairs.
To our great delight, these initiatives have yielded amazing
results (we now have over 100 majors and minors declared) and
a strong community of undergraduates has been established in
the Department.
