Classical Studies: Application Process
Classics > Programs & Courses > Graduate > Classical Studies > Application Process

The application process for the graduate programs in Classical Studies is administered by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

Applications can be submitted online.

You must submit the application and other required materials by January 10th to be considered for admission to the graduate program for the following academic year. Applications received late will be considered whenever possible, but in most years commitments are made shortly after the deadline, especially for the Ph.D. program, for both financial aid and space in the program.

The Department does not require a separate application for fellowships administered by the Department. However, other forms of aid--other fellowships, work/study, and student loans--will require separate applications and other financial statements. Consult the web pages of the Office of Financial Aid or the graduate Office of Fellowships & Recruitment.

Online Application
Applicants are required to apply online. The online application will give you the opportunity to submit the application, statement of purpose, writing sample and application fee electronically. Whatever you submit online will then be available to both the Department and the Rackham Admissions Office and so will not have to be submitted by mail. All other required materials, however, will still have to be mailed to Rackham or to the Department.

Mail-in Application
Mail-in Applications are only available in extreme situations where you are unable to submit online, and after contacting the department. Please contact Michelle Biggs for further information regarding mail-in applications.

Application Requirements

  1. Completed application
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. Statement of Purpose
  4. Scholarly writing sample - preferably a paper or thesis that you have submitted in a pertinent course.
  5. Transcripts - one official copy of records of all previous college-level work. Applicants whose degree is from a non-U.S. institution must provide two copies of transcripts/records, accompanied by official translations into English, if necessary.
  6. GRE scores

The application deadline is January 10.
