Applicants
to the graduate programs in Classical Studies
should be aware that there is now very strong
competition for available teaching positions in the
classics departments of colleges and universities.
While the opportunities in our fields are not so
restricted as they are proving to be in such fields
as English Language and Literature, History, and
Philosophy, applicants for admission should realize
that the years of accelerated academic growth are
behind us; some growth and expansion may lie ahead,
but neither we nor other departments can guarantee
that each graduate will find a teaching position.
Our experience in placement over the past several
difficult years, during which nearly all of our
graduates have found positions, justifies our
belief that our students will continue to fare well
and that our best students will fare very well
to see a list of our Ph.D. alumni). But we also
wish to be realistic about current prospects of
employment and we hope that other major departments
are being equally candid.
The
Department operates its own placement service to
assist graduates in finding their first
professional position. Job-seekers establish a
placement dossier in the department office which is
then sent, on request, to prospective employers.
Notices of available positions, from The Chronicle
of Higher Education, the American Philological
Association's Positions for Classicists and
Archaeologists, and from personal contacts with
other universities, are kept on file for ready
access within the Department. Our experience has
been that having our own specialized placement
service is of great value to our graduates,
providing a reliable, inexpensive mechanism for
applying for positions.
