Introduction This inscription provides invaluable information about the way that a career unfolded, the way that events were ranked, the number of races that a charioteer might drive in, the way that races were run and the history of chariot racing in the 2nd century AD.

Gaius Appu]leius Diocles, charioteer of the Red faction, a Spanish Lusitanian by birth, he lived for 42 years, 7 months and 23 days. He first raced for the White faction in the consulship of Acilius Aviola and Corellius Pansa. He won his first race for the same faction in the consulship of Manius Acilius Glabrio and Gaius Bellicius Torquatus. He raced for the first time for the Green faction in the second consulship of Torquatus Asprenas and Annius Libo. He won for the first time for the Red faction in the consulship of Laenas Pontianus and Antonius Rufinus.
Totals: he raced four hourse chariots for 24 years, he started in 4257 races, he won 1,463 times. In the first race after the procession: 110 times, in singles, 1064 times. He won 92 major prizes. Of these, 32 were of 30,000 HS, three of them with six-horse teams; 28 of 40,000 HS, two of them in races with six horse chariots, 38 of 50,000 HS, one of these in a seven-horse chariot; 3 of 60,000 HS. In doubles he won 347 times, four of them in races with three horse teams with prizes of 15,000 HS. In triples he won 51 times. In all he won [2900 times], taking second place 861 times, third place 576 times, fourth place once for 1,000 HS, he failed 1351 times. He tied a Blue 10 times, a Green 91, two of these for prizes of 30,000 HS. He won a grand total of 35,863,120 HS. In addition, he won 3 times in races with two horse chariots for prizes of 1,000 HS. He tied a White once, a Green twice.
He took the lead and won 815 times. He came from second place and won 67 times. He came from behind and won 36 times. He won in other ways 42 times. He snatched the victory in the last lap 502 times : 216 times over the Greens, 205 times from the Blues, 81 times from the Whites. He made nine horses winners of 100 races, and one horse a winner in 200 races.
Outstanding Accomplishments
[....]himself, in the year that he first raced in four-hourse chariots, he won twice, winning in the last lap.
It is recorded in the Record that Aurelius Teres was the first of his faction to win 1011 victories, of which he won in one year [....but Diocles in that] year in which he won 100 races, won 103 times, and in races involving one chariot from each faction, he won 83 times. In addition, increasing the glory of his career, he has surpassed Thallus, a driver of his own faction, who was the first charioteer of the Red Faction [....but Dio]cles, the most eminent of all charioteers, in that year, with a lead-horse who was not a regular part of his team, he won 134 times, 118 times in races involving one chariot from each faction, and with this record he surpassed the charioteers of all the other factions who ever participated in the circus games. It was noted with admiration by everyone that in one year, with a lead-horse who was not a regular part of his team, with Cotynus and Pompeianus as the two horses on the yoke, he won 99 races, in one race for 60,000 HS, in four for 50,000, one for 40,000, two for 30,000.
[.....of the Green] faction, won 1025 races, the first of all since the founding of the city to do so, and to win 50,000HS seven times, but Diocles surpassed him, with three horses, Abigeius, Lucidus and Paratus, under the yoke, winning 50,000 HS eight times.
He also beat C]ommunis, Venustus and Epaphroditus, three charioteers of the Blues faction who had won 1000 victories each and won, between them, 50,000 HS eleven times. Diocles, with Pompeianus and Lucidus as his yoke horses, won 50,000 [12 times...]
...] of the Green faction, winner of 1025 races and Flavius Scorpus, winner of 2048 races and Pompeius Muscolusus, winner of 3559 races, three charioteers who won 6632 races between them, and 50,000 HS twenty-eight times. [But Diocles] the most eminent [of all the charioteers] won 1462 races, and 50,000 HS 29 times.
Diocles shines with the greatest record. When Fortunatus of the Green faction, with Tuscus, won 386 races, he won 50,000 HS nine times. Diocles was a victor with Pompeianus 152 times, and won 50,000 HS 10 times, 60,000 HS once.
Diocles is outstanding with respect to new sorts of prizes, never before recorded, because, on one day, when 40,000 HS were put up twice, he won the prize both times with a six-horse chariot, and more than [....] his own, with a seven horse team without a yoke, a number of horses that had never been seen before, he won 50,000 HS in the contest with Abigaeus as his lead horse, and in other contests without using a whip, he won 30,000 HS, [....]. He seems to be crowned with double glory from these novelties.
Pontius Epaphroditus of the Blue faction appears to have held first place amongst the charioteers who had more than 1000 victories, who was sole victor in the time of our emperor Antoninus Augustus Pius, 1467 times, and won in races with one chariot from each faction 911 times. But Diocles, with 1462 victories, beats him with 1064 victories in races with one chariot from each faction. At the same time [Pontius Epaphroditus won in the last lap] 467 times, while Diocles won in the last lap 502 times.
Diocles the charioteer, in the year that he won 127 times, was victor with Abigeius, Lucidus and Pompeianus in the yoke 103 times, amongst [...]
[...Amongst] eminent charioteers, those who won the most with African horses, pontius Epaphroditus of the Blue Faction won 134 times with Bubalus; Pompeius Musculus of the Green faction, [with his horse....won] 115 times. Diocles beat them all, winning with Pompeianus 152, and in races with one chariot from each faction, 144 times.
His record was increased with his five yoke horses Cotynus, Galata, Aigeius, Lucidus and pompeianusm winning 445 times, in races with one chariot from each faction, 397 times.
