Barbara Hernandez has been in prison since 1990 for a murder she did not commit. It was committed by her sadistic, drug addicted, older boyfriend, while Barbara, then 16, was crouching nearby in fear of her own life. When she was arrested, she repeatedly requested an attorney. However, law enforcement officers detained her for three days, in isolation, without permitting her to call counsel, or anyone else. On the third day, police brought in her abusive mother to pressure her. Barbara eventually gave police a statement based on whatever her mother told her, which is nowhere recorded. Thus, Barbara Hernandez' statement, obtained illegally through her status as a juvenile, was then used against her to try her as an adult.
