Below is a general outline for the Michigan Concrete Canoe Team process by which a concrete canoe may be developed. Some of the programs used in the design and development of the canoe can be found on Univeristy of Michigan CAEN Sites (i.e. Rhino, AutoCAD, Fastship, ABAQUS).
Hull Design
- Use software such as Rhino and AutoCAD to engineer the hull design
- Perform analysis on different variables such as hydrostatics, tension, and shear forces
- Use a CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) Router to cut out the canoe mold
Research & Development
- Research previous technical papers to find out the best techniques, aggregates, and other vital canoe information
- Contact companies and order materials such as aggregates, cementitious material, latex, and reinforcement mesh
- Perform strength and compression tests on concrete samples using a weight-loading machine
Construction
- Learn about concrete properties
and proper concrete placement
- Perform hands-on tasks such as making, sanding, and sealing the canoe
Technicalities
- Learn valuable presentation skills to use for classes or group projects
- Build organization techniques and preparing reports and papers
