When you call

Each person’s circumstances are different. The range of services below was designed to allow a caring and supportive response to each individual’s needs.

When your illness or injury is reported, Work~Connections staff will:

  • Take basic information regarding your illness or injury;
  • Mail information to you regarding the program and how it can help you;
  • Review your needs and requests;
  • Review your supervisor’s needs and requests; and
  • Review your medical condition.

During Recovery

Work~Connections staff will assist and support you and your supervisor in the following ways during your recovery:

  • Contact you and your supervisor on an “as needed” basis;
  • Facilitate communication with your physician and assist you in understanding the options available to you;
  • Respond to your department’s questions addressing appropriateness of absence, extended benefits and expected duration of disability;
  • Consult with your doctor and discuss your diagnosis, recovery and return to work plan;
  • Interact with other departments to respond to your questions about benefit, employment status, salary and other issues that arise.

Return-to-Work Plan

When you are able to return to work, Work~Connections staff will assist in the following ways:

  • Help evaluate what is required for your job and anticipate needs for accommodation;
  • Develop and discuss a return-to-work plan with you, your supervisor and your physician;
  • Maintain regular contact with you to oversee your return-to-work plan;
  • Advocate on your behalf to help resolve any issues that may arise when you return to work;
  • Explore options for assistance from other University resources, the HR/AA Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FASAP), UMHS Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Family Care Resources, and other University and/or community-based support programs;
  • Provide appropriate updates to you, your supervisor and your physician, as needed;
  • Provide health resources information to you, as needed;
  • Follow up on your medical progress and assist you with any medical issues after you return to work.
