What is My Operating System?
Your operating system/operating environment is basically the software that
runs your computer.
Macintosh:
- OS X: Click on the desktop (not within an open window or on an
icon) and then click on the Apple Menu in the upper-left corner of the
screen; then click "About This Mac".
- Pre-OS X: If you are on a Macintosh, you can find out which
version of the system you are running by clicking on the Finder icon, which is the icon all the way at the
top right-hand corner of your screen. Hold the mouse button down and
select "Finder." Then, click on the rainbow-colored apple in the top left-hand corner
of your screen. Hold the mouse button down, select "About this
Macintosh," and release the mouse button. This will bring up a window
that will give you information about your Mac. It will look something
like this:
- The info we're concerned with here is at the top right-hand side. The
part that says System Software 7.5.3 Revision 2 tells you that's
the version of the system you have.
PC:
- Go to the control panels and double-click the icon for System. In
the window that opens, your version of Windows will be listed next to a
Microsoft symbol.
