SPSS Installation: Downloading SPSS 8.0 for Windows 95 or NT

Before beginning, take note of the following system requirements:

  • 600 MB of free disk space on your computer's hard drive;
  • The 29 digit code you received upon purchase of the license;
  • A File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program.
Also, we strongly recommend that you have an ethernet connection to the university before downloading SPSS 8.0. You will be dowloading at least 190 MB, which makes low speed connections, such as a modem, impractical. If you do not have an ethernet connection to the university, consider purchasing the CD. Information on this is on the Purchasing SPSS 8.0 page.

The Actual Downloading instructions
  1. Start your FTP program. FTP program interfaces differ, but in all programs you will need to specify the following:
    • Remote Host Name--the computer you are connecting to. You should enter login.itd.umich.edu.
    • Login name and Password--Use your uniqname and password
    • Directory on the remote host--You can specify this before or after you actually connect. The directory with spsswin8.exe, the file you want, is /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/swdist/s/spss/spsswin.80/.
    • Directory on your computer--Make sure the directory or file folder specified is the one in which you wish to place the file.
  2. Specify that the file to be transferred is a binary file.
  3. Now, look for the file called spsswin8.exe. If you do not see it, check to make sure that you are in the right directory. The file is about 190 MB in size. Once you have found the file, copy it from the network directory to the directory or folder on your hard drive. With an ethernet connection, this should take 5-10 minutes.
  4. After the file transfer is completed, but before shutting the FTP program down, check that the size of spsswin8.exe on your computer is exactly the same as spsswin8.exe on the network. This should be done to verify that nothing was lost during the transfer.
  5. When you start the self-extraction process (next step), you will be asked to specify a directory into which all the extracted files will go. You should create a directory to place these in. It should not be the same directory you intend to keep SPSS itself in permanently, because these extracted files are needed only temporarily, and can be deleted later on.
  6. Open up Windows Explorer, and navigate to the directory which contains spsswin8.exe. Double click on it to start the self-extraction process. When asked for a directory for the extracted files, specify the one you created in the previous step.

At this point, you should be ready to install SPSS 8.0.

If you encountered problems while following these instructions, and need assistance, email spss.help@umich.edu, or call 764-STAT and select menu option 1 to speak to a consultant
