SPSS Installation: 7.5.3 for Windows 95/NT

These step-by-step instructions should get SPSS 7.5.3 up and running on your PC.

  1. First, contact Licenses.ITD@umich.edu for access to the SPSS 7.5.3 file. Alternatively, if you would prefer to own a CD-ROM copy of the program, contact Campus Software and Supplies at 647-2537. This office is located in the basement of the Student Union. You will also be provided with a license number which you will be asked for during the installation.
  2. If you have not purchased a CD-ROM from Campus Software and Supplies, you can download SPSS 7.5.3 from the directory "/afs/umich.edu/group/itd/ swdist/s/spss/spsswin.753". You will need to use an FTP program to copy the file "spss753.exe" to your computer (this is a binary file).
  3. If you bought any additional modules (e.g. Tables, Trends, Categories, Exact Statistics), also download those modules from the appropriate directories.
  4. Follow these instructions if you downloaded SPSS. If you have the CD, go to Step 5.
    1. Use the Windows Explorer to find the files you have downloaded. Double-click on the file "spss753.exe." A window will pop up, asking you which directory you would like the files extracted to. (The spss753.exe file actually contains a number of files, all compressed together.) The files can be placed into any temporary directory, and can be deleted after installation.
    2. If you have any additional modules, double-click on the files for these modules as well. Place the files which will be extracted into the same directory as the one in which you placed the extracted files from the previous step.
    3. Move into the directory which contains the extracted, decompressed SPSS files. You should see a file called "setup.exe," which you can double-click to begin installation. Now go to Step 6.
  5. If you purchased CD-ROM, place it into the CD-ROM drive and click the Start button, then Run. Enter the name of the drive for the CD-ROM (e.g. d:\). Then find and double-click the setup.exe file.
  6. You will be asked what directory SPSS should be installed in -- this is the final directory, in which SPSS will reside. The setup program will give a default directory. At some point, you will also be asked for the serial number, which is 176578.
  7. If you wish to have the syntax guides included on-line, which takes up a bit more memory on the hard drive but allows quick access to all the latest SPSS manuals in a computerized form, be sure to check the box when it asks what you would like installed.
  8. Next, you will be asked for the license number, which is 29 digits long and should have been provided to you when you purchased SPSS. Enter the number in groups of five, separated by spaces. The last group will actually only contain four digits. Then click Update, and continue on.
  9. Next it will ask you which modules you would want to install.. Everyone should install Base, Advanced, and Pro. As for the other modules, SELECT ONLY THOSE WHICH YOU PURCHASED.

That should cover the basics of installation. Retain the license number in case you should have to re-install SPSS. Also retain the file "setup.exe" as it will be needed when you renew the license each year. You may delete the original .exe files which were downloaded (the ones from which all the extracted files came).
