SPSS Installation: SPSS 8.0 for Windows 95 or NT

Before installing: Close all other programs and disable virus protection software.

If you are installing from CD-ROM:

Insert the CD and wait a few seconds. Windows should automatically read from the CD and a window will appear with several options you can choose from. Choose the first option: Install SPSS.

If you are installing from files you down-loaded from the network:

Using the Explorer, move into the directory where you placed the SPSS files. Find a file called "setup.exe" and double-click to run it. A window will appear with several options you can choose from. Choose the first option: Install SPSS.

The installation, screen-by-screen:

1. This is just text.

2. This is also text.

3. You may specify the directory that SPSS should be installed into, or leave the default directory as it is.

4. Change the name and organization fields so they both read "University of Michigan." Also enter the serial number 176578.

5. Select Custom Installation.

6. If you wish to have the syntax guide manuals available to you under the Help menu, check the appropriate box at the bottom of this screen. The syntax manuals are quite comprehensive and may be acceptable replacements for actual paper manual s for some users. However, they do require an additional 21 MB. It is recommended that you leave all other boxes checked; click Next.

7. Select Personal Installation (this should already be selected by default).

8. Enter the 29-digit license code as provided to you when you purchased SPSS. Do not omit the spaces between the groups of 4 or 5 digits; enter it exactly as seen. Click Update before moving on.

9. Only the Professional and Advanced Statistics boxes should be checked in most cases. If you did purchase any additional modules, do select those. However, if something which you did not purchase is selected this will result in an error dur ing the installation.

10. It will display the current settings so that you may verify these settings. If anything is not as you want it, click Back and return to the appropriate screen.

At this point the installation takes place. This takes a few moments.

11. It will tell you whether it found Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. This program is used to read the Syntax Guides which you may have elected to install. If you did install the syntax guides, and it says that you do not yet have Adobe Acrobat, elect to install it at this point. Otherwise, choose "Do not re-install."

12. It will tell you whether it found ODBC software on your computer. If it did not, you may choose to install it now. ODBC is used to connect different database programs (Access, Excel, SAS, SPSS) together; however, SPSS ca n read from most of these programs already. ODBC is not widely used and may not be worth the disk space.

13. When asked, click "Register later." Registering is not necessary due to the relationship between the University and SPSS.

14. You may de-select the "Run Tutorial" option if you do not wish to run the tutorial right away. This is the end of the installation process; click Finish.

If you down-loaded SPSS rather than installing from a CD-ROM, at this time you may delete the files which were downloaded. Everything that SPSS needs is now located in the SPSS directory. If you put all the down-loaded files in a directory such as c:\temp\spssinst, you can delete that whole directory. You may also delete the file spsswin8.exe, which you originally down-loaded.

If you have questions or problems, you may send e-mail to spss.help@umich.edu or call 764-STAT (select menu option 1) and ask to be referred to the SPSS consultant.
