SPSS Installation: SPSS 6.1 for Macintosh Computers
Minimum System Requirements
- * Operating System
- System 7.0 or later
- * Hardware
- A 68030 or 68040 processor with a floating point unit (FPU)
- 12MB or more of available RAM
- A hard disk with at least 19MB of available disk space (with an additional 2.5MB available for temporary files during installation)
- A monitor with 640 x 480 resolution or higher
- Apple Shared Library Manager (ASLM) 1. 1.2 or later (supplied with SPSS)
Note: There is a Power Mac version of SPSS (6.1.1) and a regular Mac version (6.1.25). Please be sure that you have the correct version before beginning.
The Installation Procedure
To Install SPSS 6.1:
- Turn off any virus protection software. If your virus protection software is a system extension, you can turn it off by restarting your Macintosh while pressing and holding the SHIFT key.
- Insert SPSS Disk I into the floppy disk drive. Make sure that the disk is unlocked. SPSS needs to write information to this disk during the installation procedure.
- Double Click on the SPSS installation icon.

- Select the type of installation you want from the pop-up list.

- Easy Install installs all features of the SPSS Base System. This requires about 19 MB of hard disk space.
- Custom Install installs only those features you select click on the corresponding Info button if you want to know more about the feature before making a decision. SPSS Essentials is required in order for SPSS to run.

- Select a destination folder. You can install SPSS in an existing folder or create a new one. By default, SPSS is installed in the SPSS 6.1 folder. If this folder does not exist, the installation procedure creates the folder. You cannot install SPSS 6.1 in a folder containing a previous version of SPSS.
- Click on Install, and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
- To complete the installation, you need to enter your name and the serial number printed on Disk II.

- Once you click on OK, you will be asked to verify the name and serial number. The serial number for U of M is 194348; the name is The University of Michigan. Please make sure these are correct--you will not get a chance to change them later.
- If you do not have ALSM 1 or later installed on your system, SPSS will prompt you to install it from the SPSS installation disks.
Installing SPSS Options
If you have purchased additional options, you must install them separately. SPSS Base (what you just installed if you followed the instructions above) is required to run any options.
The following options are available:
- Professional Statistics. Additional statistical procedures, including factor, cluster, and discriminant analyses.
- Advanced Statistics. Advanced statistical procedures, including MANOVA, logistic regression, loglinear models, Cox regression, Kaplan-Meier and actuarial survival analysis.
- Tables. A powerful table-building facility for displaying data in professional, publication ready formats.
- Trends. A comprehensive set of procedures for forecasting time series analysis with multiple curve-fitting models, smoothing models, and methods for estimating autoregressive functions.
- Categories. Procedures for conjoint analysis and optimal scaling techniques, including correspondence analysis.
- LISREL. Procedures for analysis of linear structural models, including causal path models.
After Installation: What is in the SPSS Folder
Full installation puts the following files in you SPSS folder:
- SPSS. The SPSS application. Double clicking on this icon starts SPSS.
- SPSS Tutorial. The online tutorial program.
- Read Me. Last minute information about the SPSS Base system and any installed option. Sample Documents. A folder of sample data, charts, and syntax files.
- Help. EHelp application and files that provide context-sensitive online Help.
- Production Mode. A special application to run SPSS jobs in an automated, unattended mode. Production mode uses SPSS command syntax stored in a plain text file to run procedures and save results in output and chart files.
Adding and Removing Features After Installation
To add or remove Base system features after installation:
- Turn off any virus Protection software. If your virus protection software is a system extension, you can turn off extensions by restarting your Macintosh while pressing and holding the Shift key.
- Insert Installation Disk I in the floppy disk drive.
- Double-click on the SPSS installation icon.
- Select Custom Install or Custom Remove from the pop-up list.
- Pick the feature you wish to add/remove. You can click on the Info button to get information on a particular feature.
Removing SPSS
Use the Custom Remove option described above to remove SPSS entirely from your hard disk. Simply trashing all the files in the 'SPSS 6.1' directory will not entirely remove SPSS from your hard drive, because some files have been placed in the Preferences:System:SPSS folder.
