Introduction to NVivo 7

November 30, 2007

Lingling Zhang

This workshop is designed for researchers who are interested in using NVivo 7 for their qualitative data analysis projects. The full-day workshop introduces the basic concepts of qualitative analysis and the capabilities of NVivo software. It covers key components of NVivo projects including documents, cases, memos, annotations, nodes, sets, and attributes. Participants are led through hand-on practice on creating new projects, opening existing projects, copying projects, and building/modifying projects. It then follows by document management tasks including preparing and formatting documents in Microsoft Word, importing documents, editing documents, and creating cases from documents. Participants also learn creating attributes, assigning attributes to cases, as well as importing attributes from Excel. Two types of nodes—free nodes and tree nodes— are introduced next. Various coding methods are then addressed. Examples are given on building efficient and organized node systems. Participants also learn how to keep track of emerging ideas in qualitative data analysis by using memos and annotations, and how to link them to the documents. Four types of queries are covered: text search, node query, matrix query, and compound query, and exercises are conducted to run different types of queries. In the end a brief introduction of NVivo models is given on how to visually explore patterns and relationships among ideas.

The workshop is not intended to cover qualitative data analysis methodology, although some methodological topics will be addressed.
