Statistics: A Review

A one-day, intensive review of common statistical methods of design, measurement, analysis and presentation of scientific investigations. The workshop is designed for any scholar engaged in quantitative research. Additional material presented by faculty associates, research staff, and technical staff of CSCAR.

- What should we measure?
- What are the main design types; what are the comparative advantages of each?
- How are sample sizes determined?
- What are the appropriate inference procedures?
- What do standard errors, p-values and levels of confidence mean?
- What are some dangers we need to avoid?
- How should we display our results?
- What are the statistical software options?
Statistics: A Review will discuss answers to the following questions: - Instructors
- Edward Rothman is the Director of CSCAR, and has been a professor in the Department of Statistics at The University of Michigan since 1969. He has had extensive experience as a statistical consultant in studies both on and off campus.
Brenda Gillespie is the Associate Director of CSCAR and Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at The University of Michigan. She has extensive experience as a statistical consultant, and specializes in regression and ANOVA, survival analysis, design of experiments, and clinical trials.
Joe Kazemi is an SPSS consultant at CSCAR, and specializes in data management and quantitative data analysis.
Kathy Welch is a SAS Consultant for CSCAR. - Audience
- Any interested scholar.
- Prerequisite
- This workshop presumes at least one course in statistics, even if several years ago.
- Provisions
- The enrollee will receive lecture notes, a bibliography, and example computer package commands and output. Morning and afternoon refreshments provided. Break time for lunch (lunch not provided).
