Christie-Keiko Abe, *
violinist, recently graduated from the University of Michigan School of Music with Professional studies (Post-Masters) where she was a fellowship student
under Paul Kantor and a recipient of School of Music scholarship and Chi Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor. She completed her undergraduate studies with Honors at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and her Master of Music from Australian Institute of Music, Sydney. She began her musical studies at the age of six on piano and violin at nine She won many awards and competitions, including Living Stone Mote Award for musical excellence at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; Sydney Conservatorium scholarships for both violin and piano, a winner of Sydney Conservatorium Concerto Competition, solo appearance with Sydney Consevatorium Symphony Orchestra and a Hornorable mention award in ASTA National Solo Competition 2000. She is currently a member of RACC Trio ( a piano trio) in Ann Arbor, Michigan and a member of IRIS Chamber Orchestra under Michael Stern in Memphis, Tennessee. She continues her violin study under Paul Kantor.

Violinist, Gabriel Bolkosky was born and raised in
Detroit, Michigan. He has performed hundreds of new
works including premieres of works by Thomas Ades,
Michael Torke and Andrew Mead. Recently, Gabe
performed in a duo with Marimba playing works by
Allejandro Vinao and Astor Piazzola, placing third in
the Vienna International Perrenoud competition. Gabe
also recently won the Cleveland Institute of Music
Competition playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto.
As a founding member of the new-music sextet, Non
sequitur, Gabe has performed all over the United
States and recently at the Karnatic Lab Music Festival
in the Netherlands. In April of 2001Non sequitur will
make its New York City debut playing music of Evan
Haus among other works. The sextet has also given
workshops in improvisation and musicianship to
thousands of children including nearly five thousand
in the Aspen, Colorado valley. The workshops
introduce music in a new light to the children and
demonstrate to them how to be more sensitive as human
beings through the musical process. Non sequitur has
also given workshops to young composers at the Walden
School in Dublin, New Hampshire. This coming July
they will serve a ten-day residency at the Walden
School.
Recently, Gabe has been named the new executive
director of the nonprofit organization The Phoenix
Ensemble, an Ann Arbor based chamber orchestra and
experimental ensemble. He also acts as concertmaster
of the group.
As a teacher, Gabe currently works with twenty-one
students privately. For the last two summers, he has
been assistant director of the Cleveland, Ohio based
program, Strings Attached, an intensive, month-long
string program for inner city youth, sponsored by the
Twenty First Century Community Learning Project. In
the coming months he will serve on the faculty of
Suzuki Institutes in Portland Maine and Salt Lake
City, Utah. Last year he worked as the teaching
assistant for Donald Weilerstein (founding member of
the Cleveland String Quartet).
Currently Gabe is pursuing a Masters in Improvisation
at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Ed
Sarath and Ellen Rowe.

Winton Choi

Darren C. Dunn was born and grew up in Rochester NY. He received his BA in Psychology with a minor in Dance from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo. While at Geneseo he was very involved in gay rights activism and in numerous social psychology research projects (for which he
received two consecutive Undergraduate Research Awards). Simultaneously Darren was choreographing and performing with the Geneseo Dance Ensemble. During his summers Darren has: performed and internationally toured as a featured dancer with "Stephen Foster: The Musical", interned at the Jacob's
Pillow Dance Festival and been a scholarship student at the Doug Varone & Dancers Summer Dance Intensive as well as the Paul Taylor Summer Dance Institute. Currently Darren is working towards his MFA in Dance at the University of Michigan. There he has been the recipient of the Esther Pease Graduate Award in Dance and is a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) teaching non-major ballet and modern dance classes.


Katri Ervamaa *
Cellist Katri Ervamaa has performed widely in the US, as well as in her native Finland and throughout Europe. As the member of the Owla String Quartet, Katri has appeared on Bowdoin, Soundfest, Orlando, Norrtalje,
Lycka, Haut Limousin, St.Foie de Grande and Kuhmo Festivals, as well as in recitals in Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, England, Sweden, Taiwan and the US. She is a founding member of the Brave New Works and also a member of Ed Sarath's Timescape, a nine-member free improvising group. Katri holds B.M and M.M degrees from the Northern Illinois University and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Her primary teachers include Erling Blondal Bengtsson, Marc Johnson, Kazimierz Michalik and Lauri Laitinen, as well as Andrew Jennigs
and the Vermeer and the Borodin String Quartets. Katri teaches cello and chamber music at the School for the Performing Arts - Ann Arbor and the Flint Institute's School of the Performing Arts.


Jennifer Goltz
With the performance of William Bolcom's "Briefly it enters" Ms. Goltz has performed with Brave New Works for the sixth time. Her affiliation with Brave New Works began in 1997 with Alberto Ginastera's "Cantata Para America Magica" for soprano and percussion orchestra. In 1998, she performed "Circles" by Luciano Berio. In February she performed George Crumb's Madrigals. Last December, she performed Earl Kim's "Where Grief Slumbers". This spring She will be performing Carter Pann's "Women" which has been specifically written for Ms. Goltz and Brave New Works. Ms. Goltz received her M.M. in vocal performance from the University of Michigan in 1997. She specializes in music of the 20th century, premiering works by composers in the School of Music and across the country. Ms. Goltz is currently in the MA program in Music Theory at the University of Michigan.


 Jared Hauser *
is an active chamber musician and soloist having performed throughout North America and Europe. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, most recently 1st prize at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Bradlin Competition.

Jared performs as principal oboe of the Battle Creek Symphony, and also performs regularly with the Michigan Opera Theater, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and the Phoenix Ensemble. He was formerly the principal oboe of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, (Texas), and oboist with the American Radio Chamber Orchestra, (Houston). He has also performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra; the New World Symphony; and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Hauser is on the faculty of Concordia College (Ann
Arbor, MI) and is an assistant instructor of oboe at
Michigan State University where he is also pursuing
doctoral studies as a recipient of the MSU
Distinguished Fellowship Award. He also instructs oboe
at the University of Michigan Summer Arts Institute
and the Interlochen Arts Camp (All State Division).
Jared formerly taught at Rice University's Preparatory
Division, the Pilgrim Fine Arts Academy, (Houston),
and the Cranbrook School (Bloomfield, MI).

Recent summers have taken him to the Sarasota Music
Festival, (Florida) and the Breckenridge Festival,
(Colorado), where he performed as principal oboe of
the National Repertory Orchestra.

Mr. Hauser holds a M.M. Degree from Rice University;
Artist Diploma from the Oberlin College Conservatory;

a B.M. from the University of Michigan and is a
graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy. His
principal teachers include Robert Atherholt, James
Caldwell, Elizabeth Camus, Alex Klein, Harry Sargous,
Dan Stolper, and Mark Dubois.

 


Micah Heilbrunn*

is from London Ontario Canada and has been a member of Brave New Works since its inception. Micah is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts academy and has recieved both his Bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Michigan studying with artist and mentor
Deborah Chodacki. Currently Micah is residing back in ontario teaching clarinet at the University of Windsor and playing with various ensembles in the area. This summer he will be in Colarado attending Aspen music festival as a Fellow.

Amy Ley, Harp *
Amy Ley recieved both her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in harp performance from the University of Michigan completing her education there in the spring of 2000. Her primay teacher has been Lynne Aspnes, professor of harp at U of M. She has also studied with Alice Challifoux at the Salzedo Harp Colony in 1995 and with Nancy Allen at the Aspen Music Festival in 1997 and 1999. Amy is now a freelance musician and principal harpist for the Ann Arbor, Lansing, Saginaw, and Adrian Symphonies. This is her fourth season to enjoy playing with the Brave New Works Ensemble.

 




Carolyn Lukancic
began studying violin at the age of eight. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University in 1995 where she studied privately with Christian Teal of the Blair String Quartet and chamber music with John Kochanowski of the Concord String Quartet. She received a Master's of Music degree in violin performance in 1997 under Stephen Shipps, studying chamber music with Andrew Jennings. Carolyn is currently residing in the Ann Arbor, MI area as a freelance violinist/violist and private violin/viola instructor. She has been Musical Director of the Monroe Youth Orchestra 1997 to the present and is a faculty member for the Michigan All-State High School and Junior High School Summer Festivals at the Interlochen Arts Academy. She is currently a member of the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra and performs with various other orchestras and chamber ensembles in the Ann Arbor area.

Stephen Miahky
, A native of Akron, Ohio, Stephen Miahky is currently a senior at the University of Michigan School of Music. He is pursuing a violin performance degree under Stephen Shipps. Stephen has won several competitions, including the University of Michigan Concerto Competition, the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs Competition, and the Louis Lane Competition. Stephen is Co-Associate Concertmaster of the Ann Arbor Symphony and as served as concertmaster and principal of several ensembles including the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, the Plymouth Symphony, Brave New Works, the NOI Philharmonic, and the Kent/Blossom Chamber Orchestra. As a chamber musician, Stephen has performed extensively with the Michigan Chamber Players, Chamber Music Ann Arbor, and Strings in the Mountains as a Young-Artist-in-Residence. He has performed with such leading musicians as Nick Eanet, Martin Beaver, Yehonatan Berick, Andrew Jennings, Paul Kantor, Owen Carman, Steven Doane, Yizhak Schotten, Chris Brown, and the Arianna String Quartet. His former teachers include Alan Bodman and David Russell.


Dina Maccabee *
studies the viola with Yizhak Schotten at the University of Michigan. Originally from the Bay Area, her experiences there playing with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra under music director
Alasdair Neale inspired her to pursue a career in music. Since moving to Ann Arbor, she has performed as principal violist of the University Philharmonia Orchestra, and as a member of the Phoenix Ensemble, Michigan Opera Works, and Brave New Works. This year, Dina played in a workshop for composer John Zorn, in preparation for a performance of his improvisational game-piece, "Cobra." She has appeared with the improvisation-based Creative Arts Orchestra at Kerrytown's "Jazz at the Edge" series, and her playing is featured on Good Luck Fire Chief, an album released last year by Ann Arbor folk artist Brian Lillie. Other artists she has performed with include Peter Apfelbaum, Spencer Barefield, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Her previous teachers include Alan Bodman, Pamela Freund, Don Ehrlich, and Daniel Avshalomov, as Sam Pilafian, David Balakrishnan, and Ed Sarath. She is currently pursuing undergraduate degrees in Viola Performance and Honors History.

Sasha Margolis spent eight years as concertmaster of the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, both in Italy and America, during which time he led U.S. premieres of operas by Janacek, Bellini, Donizetti, Henze, and Kagel. He has performed chamber music with Andres Cardenes, Ann Williams, and members of the Pro Arte, Corigliano, and Arianna String Quartets, as well as pianists Sanford Margolis, Kenneth Cooper, Robert Weirich, Dady Mehta, and Jeremy Denk. In addition, Mr. Margolis has been soloist in concertos of Berg and Mendelssohn under the baton of Robert Spano. He received degrees from Oberlin College, Indiana University, and Northern Illinois University, studying with Shmuel Ashkenasi, Paul Biss, and Gregory Fulkerson. While at
Indiana, he was concertmaster of the Richmond (IN) Symphony. Mr. Margolis is currently a member of the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra.


Timothy McAllister, alto saxophone

Mike Morrison *
studied percussion with Michael Udow and Michael Gould at U-M. He has performed in numerous student composer forums and new music concerts at the university. Currently Mike is teaching percussion privately and to high school ensembles.





 


Violist Joanna Myers graduated with honors from Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music in 1995 and from Bowling Green State University in 1998, where she held a string quartet fellowship. Her primary teachers include Kathryn Plummer, Nancy Buck, Rami Solomonov, and Michael Hining. An active chamber and orchestral musician, Ms. Myers has participated in Kent-Blossom, Aspen, and Roundtop music festivals, and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. In 1999 she was a member of Chicago's Civic Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. Joanna currently lives in Ann Arbor and performs with the Grand Rapids Symphony, South Bend Symphony, and Michigan Opera Works.

Esther Noh *
is currently pursuing master's degrees in violin performance and improvisation at the University of Michigan. She has won numerous national and international competitions and has soloed with the Houston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and Danish National Philharmonic. She has attended the Aspen Summer Music Festival as a recipient of an orchestral string fellowship. Ms. Noh has performed free improvisation and jazz concerts throughout Ann Arbor and has worked with Mark O'Connor, Edgar Meyer, and John Zorn. She is a member of the University of Michigan contemporary directions ensemble and has served as concertmatser of the University Symphony Orchestra.





Greg Oh *

Building a career with an eye towards versatility, Canadian pianist Gregory Oh holds graduate degrees from the University of Toronto, where he trained with Marietta Orlov, and the University of Michigan, where he trained with Martin Katz. As a chamber musician, he has shared the stage with musicians like Shauna Rolston, Patrick Gallois, Mark Fewer and the St. Lawrence String
Quartet, and is a member of Triole!, a Toronto-based clarinet trio. He enjoys collaborating on art song as well, and recently performed Schubert's Die Schone Mullerin with tenor Michael Colvin. He has also worked with conductors Raffi Armenian, Dwight Bennett, Mark Laycock and Shalom Bard, soloing with the UTSO, the Graz Hochscule Orchestra, Orchestra London, and
the Festival Players. He has held faculty positions at the Banff Centre for the Arts, both in Music and Sound, and Theatre Arts, where he worked with the Contemporary Opera and Song Training Program. Also at Banff, he was involved in the production of Claude Vivier's Kopernikus: rituel du mort and the premieres of Andrew Toovey's Spurt of Blood, and Graham Cozzubbo's Paris
1916. He has also premiered works by Glenn Buhr, Heather Schmidt, Walter Buczynski, Erik Ross, Christopher Matey and Jeffrey Koene. He is a frequent collaborator with cabaret performer Patricia O'Callaghan, whom he recently toured with, and has also performed for The Festival of the Sound, Music Around Us, Two New Hours, and the Soulpepper Theatre Company. His
performances have been heard on CBC Radio One and Radio Two, and seen on CBC Television, TVOntario and on Bravo's Live at the Rehearsal Hall. He is the artistic director of the Music by Numbers chamber series in Toronto, a founding member of Arche, a Canadian new music ensemble, and currently the music director of the San Diego Opera Ensemble.


Wendy Olson *
Wendolyn Olson is an ardent performer of new solo and chamber works for the violin. She has worked with leading composers including John Harbison, Henryk Gorecki, Leslie Bassett, Bright Sheng, William Albright, Ben Johnston and Ofer Ben-Amots. She has personally commissioned a number of
compositions for violin, and will be presenting three recitals featuring music by Bela Bartok and composers influenced by him in the spring of 2001. In addition to recitals of new music with pianist/composer Gabriela Frank,
she has played with the University of Michigan Contemporary Directions Ensemble and has made guest appearances with the Michigan-based new music ensemble, Quorum. She has passed on to young people an appreciation of new music by offering summer classes in twentieth-century repertoire.

As a member of the Denver-based DaVinci String Quartet, Ms. Olson performed and taught throughout the country, introducing new audiences to works commissioned by American chamber music patroness Elizabeth Sprague-Coolidge, in addition to more familiar string quartet repertoire. Ms. Olson recorded the string chamber music of Charles Martin Loeffler with the DaVinci Quartet for Naxos in the winter of 2000.

Ms. Olson has served on the faculties of the University of Denver and Colorado College, the Interlochen Center for the Arts' All-State Program, the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop, the Chamber Musicians of Northern California Workshop, the Montana State University Chamber Music Festival, the New York Chamber Music Workshop in Troy, the Suzuki Association of Colorado Chamber Music Camp, and the Colorado State University Summer Music Camp. She has served as a visiting instructor at the University of Northern Colorado, Kansas State University, the University of Wyoming, and the University of Southern Florida. Ms. Olson is currently a doctoral candidate in violin performance at the University of Michigan.

Rachel Parker grew up in Farmington Hills Michigan. she has studied with Louis Stout and Soren Hermannson. Currently, rachel is a sophomore at U of M studying horn performance.

Emily Perryman *
Since receiving her master's degree in flute performance from the University of Michigan in December of 1998, Emily Perryman has established a successful free-lance career in the Ann Arbor area,
performing with the Flint Symphony, Plymouth Symphony, Brave New Works,
Phoenix Ensemble, Michigan Opera Works and Comic Opera Guild, as well as
for several local festivals, churches and hospitals. Ms. Perryman also holds bachelor degrees in flute performance and music education from the Ohio State University, where she graduated summa cum laude and was awarded the Theodore Presser Foundation Scholarship. In her senior year, she was the collegiate division winner of the Central Ohio Flute Association competition. Her principal teachers have included Katherine Borst Jones, Leone Buyse, Lorna McGhee, and Jeffery Zook, and she has
performed in masterclasses for Peter Lloyd, Susan Milan, Jim Walker, and Robert Willoughby, among others. In addition to her active performing career, Ms. Perryman currently works full-time at Shar Products Company, where she coordinates a CD consignment program for string players. An avid music educator, she holds a state of Michigan teaching certificate, maintains a private studio of fifteen flute students, and serves as a flute adjudicator for the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Solo &
Ensemble Festivals. In her ^Sspare^T time, Emily loves spending time with her husband and theatre director Glenn Bugala and her two feline friends, Charlie and Stanley.


Violinist, Maria Sampen *
is a native of Bowling Green, Ohio. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan, where she was a scholarship student of Paul Kantor in the School of Music. She completed her Masters of Music
degree at Rice University in May, 1999 where she studied violin with Kenneth Goldsmith and chamber music with Paul Katz and Norman Fischer. She is currently working on her doctorate in violin performance at the University of Michigan. Ms. Sampen made her solo debut with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in Ohio. She has since performed as concerto soloist with the Illinois Symphony,
the Evansville Philharmonic, the West Shore Symphony, the Pontiac Oakland Symphony and the Michigan Pops Orchestra and was named winner of the concerto competitions at both the
University of Michigan (1996) and Rice University (1998) and received second prize in the William Byrd International String Competition (2000). She has spent her summers performing as a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival as well at the Mozarteum Sommerakademie in Salzburg,
Austria and the Interlochen Arts Camp. An active proponent of contemporary music, she has worked with many composers including Pierre Boulez, William Bolcom, John Harbison, Bernand Rands and William Albright and has performed as violinist/violist in the new music ensembles at the Aspen Music Festival, the
University of Michigan and Rice University. Ms. Sampen concertizes frequently with her parents--saxophonist, John Sampen, and composer/pianist, Marilyn Shrude--with whom she made her New York City debut at Lincoln Center's Bruno Walter Auditorium in June of 1996.

Emily Gosma Stoops,
began her cello studies at the age of four in her hometown Davenport, Iowa. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa with dual degrees in Music Performance and English and received a Masters degree in performance from the University of Michigan. She has performed in numerous orchestras and ensembles including The Quad City Symphony as associate principal, The Cedar Rapids Symphony, the La Fosse Baroque Ensemble, and the EMLIJI piano trio. She has performed many contemporary pieces and several premieres with the University of Iowa Center for New Music and has played in master classes with Yo Yo Ma and Emmanuel Ax, Uri Vardi, Laszlo Varga, and others. Other performances include local touring productions with the Joffrey Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, The Moody Blues, Johnny Mathis, and Lalo Schiffrin. Her major teachers include Charles Wendt, Tanya Lesinsky Carey and Anthony Elliott. She has studied chamber music with Daniel Shapiro, Anton Nel, and Leopold La Fosse.

Tam Tran hails from Appleton Wisconsin. He did his early studies at the Lawrence Academy and later on at Lawrence University. In addition, he has studied with Emanuel Vardi at the University of Illinois. He received the Bachelor of Music degree from Northern Illinois under the instruction of Richard Young of the Vermeer Quartet. Currently, he is working on the Master of Music degree at the University of Michigan and studying with Yizhak Schotten.

Alejandra Urrutia, *
the twenty-five years old Chilean violinist, has captivated the audience by "her pure tone and her musical sensitivity" (El Sur). She was recently appointed as the new concertmaster of the Concepcion Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Urrutia has performed with the National symphony of Chile, National
Youth Symphony of Chile, Columbus State University Orchestra; USA,
Orquesta de Camara de Morelos; Mexico, collaborating with conductors
Wilfried Junge, Patricio Cobos, Rodolfo Fischer, Bundit Ungrangsee, L. Eugenio Urrutia, Kypros Marcou, Santiago Meza.

Her 2000-2001 season will be highlighted by solo performances with the Concepcion Symphony Orchestra, the Peoria Young Players, Orquesta Filarmonica de Mendoza and the Orquesta de Camara de Cordoba, Argentina. In addition, Ms. Urrutia will offer master classes at Carnegie Mellon University, Butler University and Bradley University.

Born in Chile, Alejandra Urrutia began her violin studies at the age of eight with Patricio Damke. Soon after that she was awarded a scholarship to continue her studies with Patricio Cobos at Columbus State University. Today, She is a visiting professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Mercyhurst College, member of the Iris Chamber Orchestra in Tennessee and member of the contemporary ensemble "Brave New Works" Ms. Urrutia is a Doctorate student of Paul Kantor at the University of Michigan.

Joel Wealer began playing french horn in Hannibal, Missouri in 1987. He received the Bachelor of Music degree from the Southwest Missouri State University in in 1998 and has been working toward the Master of Music degree at the University of Michigan since 1999. Joel performs regularly with many groups in the Ann Arbor and Detroit area including The Birmingham- Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra and The Emerald Sinfonietta. He has also performed with the Saginaw Symphony Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Warren Symphony, Grosse Pointe Symphony, and the Detroit Symphony Brass Quintet. Joel's principal teachers include Ann Ley, Dave Everson, and Soren Hermansson.

Andrea Yun *
cellist, is currently studying at the University of Michigan with Professor Erling Bengtsson. A graduate of Indiana University, Andrea's background includes degrees in cello performance, music education, and
mathematics. Andrea is a member of the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and is also the cellist for the Dexter Quartet (world-renowned for its recording on Xena, Warrior Princess). She has participated in the Aspen, Scotia, and Pacific Music Festivals. Andrea hopes to pursue her career as not only a performer, but
also an educator. In her spare (and not-so-spare) time, Andrea can be found skating, biking, and playing catch

A master student in horn performance of Professor Soren Hermansson at The University of Michigan, Yuri Sampaio Zuvanov was horn teacher of The School of Music of Brasilia (Brazil) for two years. In Brazil he worked for 5 years with the pianist Maria Alice Braga in a horn and piano duet performing a good part of the horn chamber music repertory and Brazilian music arrangements. Recently in the year of 1999, together with the guitarist Carinhos 7 Cordas, Mr. Zuvanov created the Carlinhos 7 Cordas quartet specialized in a Brazilian musical stile called "choro".
