Neil played hockey for the Eveleth High School, Eveleth, Minnesota. They were State Champe in 1945 and Neil was an All- State Team selection. During his senior year, Neil scored 37 goals and 37 assists, a team record until broken by Red Berenson.

Neil's most memorable experience was winning the 1951 NCAA Championship and scoring the last goal with six seconds left in the game, his last goal in a Michigan uniform.

 

Nicknamed The Seals, he was most valuable player in 1951. He graduated from the School of Education in 1951, with an MA in 1952.
