| John hails from Minnesota, having played hockey at Eveleth High School for two years. At Michigan, John played center for three years and he was elected captain of the 1953 team. Nicknamed the "Fly," John was selected to the 1951 and 1953 NCAA Tournament team and was Honorable Mention All American. | |
| He was also the Most Valuable Player in the 1953 NCAA Tournament. John graduated from Michigan's School of Education. | |
