Prior to enrolling at Michigan, Wally played high school hockey in his hometown of Eveleth, Minnesota. Playing left wing for four seasons under Coach Vic Heyliger, from 1945-1946 to 1949-1950, Wally scored 63 goals and 83 assists for a career total of 146 points.
 
He was a three time All-American selection, winning the honor in 1948, 1949 and 1950. Wally played on Michigan's first NCAA Championship team in 1948 and served as team Captain during his senior year. During Wally's career as a player, Michigan had an outstanding record of 80 wins, 15 losses and 5 ties. Wally graduated from the School of Business Administration.
