Jim played minor hockey in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, and Junior A hockey for Prince Albert and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, prior to enrolling at the University of Michigan. Playing for Coach Vic Heyliger, Jim played two seasons on defense and one at forward for the Wolverines. He totaled 19 goals and 36 assists during his career. He had numerous honors while playing for the Maize and Blue.
   
Michigan's captain in 1953 - 1954, Jim was twice named to the NCAA Championship Team as an All-American in 1952 and 1954. He was also a member of the NCAA All-Star Team in 1952 and 1954, and a 1954 member of the All-League Team. Jim's most important goals two that he scored in the 1953 NCAA Championship victory over a favored Minnesota team. After graduation from the School of Literature, Science and Arts with a degree in Geology, Jim returned to Alberta where he coached Bantam Hockey for several years.
