Gary is from Regina, Saskatchewan and played for the Regina Pats Junior Hockey Team from 1956 to 1961. Entering Michigan in the fall of 1961, Gary played only two seasons, 1962-63 and 1963-64. He played left wing for Coach Al Renfrew and led the team in scoring both years. During the 1962-63 season, he scored 25 goals and had 20 assists in 24 games. For the 1963-64 season, he scored 38 goals and had 30 assists in 29 games.
   
Playing left wing with All-American center Gord Wilkie and right wing with Jack Cole, this line scored 76 goals and 104 assists for 180 total points, leading Michigan to a 24-4-1 record and to the 1963-64 NCAA Championship against Denver. Gary's most memorable experience was winning the NCAA Championship. He scored the winning goal late in the third period against Providence as Michigan won the semi-final game 3-2. He graduated from the School of Education. After graduation, Gary played four years of pro hockey.
