Dale MacDonald, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, played for the Saskatoon Junior Quakers before enrolling at the University of Michigan I the fall of 1957. Dale played right wing for Coach Al Renfrew for three seasons, 1958-59 through 19600-61. In his sophomore year, he scored 19 goals and had 9 assists in only 22 games. He added 17 goals and 17 assists in the next two years for a Michigan career total of 36 goals and 26 assists (62 points). Dale was elected captain his senior year and led Michigan to a 16-10-2 record, the first winning season for coach Al Renfrew at Michigan. They also won the first Big 10 Championship under Renfrew.
 
Dale's most memorable moment at Michigan was playing against the Russian National Team in the Detroit Olympia in the 1958-59 season and he scored a goal against the Russians. His most important goals while playing for the Wolverines were in the 1960-61 season when he scored two goals against Colorado College while being scouted by Tommy Ivan of the Chicago Black Hawks. After graduation, he played in the Black Hawks organization at Sault Ste. Marie in the EPHL; for Calgary in the WHL; for Buffalo in the American Hockey League; he played senior hockey once again for the Saskatoon Quakers and new plays Old Timers hockey in Calgary. Dale also coached minor league hockey in Calgary from 1971 through 1975. He graduated from the School of Business Administration in 1961.
