| Tom played for the Red Deer Rustlers Junior A team for two seasons before entering the University of Michigan. Tom played defense, one year for Coach Al Renfrew and three years for Coach Dan Farrell. During his Michigan career, he played a total of 150 games, scoring seventeen goals and eighty assists for a career total of 97 points. When he graduated, Tom was the leading scorer for defenseman in Michigan history, a record since broken. | |
| In his senior year, Tom was elected tri-captain along with Greg Fox and Angie Moretto. He was also the recipient of the Fielding H. Yost Award, as the scholar athlete for hockey during his senior year. When asked about his time at Michigan, Tom said "I think back of myself as more of a play maker than a goal scorer. The night in Houghton when I carried the puck deep into Tech's end and passed it to Angie Moretto, in the slot, and watched him score the overtime winning goals, was one of the most memorable experiences of my career at Michigan." Tom graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Literature Science & Arts in 1976. He was drafted by both the Atlanta Flames of the NHL and the Cleveland Crusades of the W.H.A. He chose to sign with the Calgary Cowboys of the W.H.A. and played the balance of the 1976-77 season with their first farm team, the Tidewater Sharks of the Southern Hockey League. | |
