Tim is from Dearborn Heights, Michigan and played for the Stratford Cullitons Junior B team, Little Caesar's Junior A team, and the Slasors team before enrolling at the University of Michigan in the fall of 1977. Tim played defense for four seasons, 1977-78 through 1980-81, three years under coach Dan Farrell and one year under coach John Giordano.
 
Tim played a career of147 games, scoring 27 goals and 115 assists for a career total 142 points. This gave him a rank of number one for all-time leading scoring defenseman for Michigan hockey. His 51 points in the 1979-80 season was also a Michigan record for a defenseman for one season, breaking the old record of 46 set by Tom Polonic in the 1963-64 season. Tim was the Dekers Club Most Colorful Rookie award recipient for the 1979-80 season. Nicknamed Archie, he was elected captain for the 1980-81 season. He won the Vic Heyliger Award as the U of M's Outstanding Defenseman three times (1979, 1980, & 1981), the first three years of this award.
 
Tim was the co-Most Valuable Player award recipient, along with his teammate John Blum, in 1981. He had many memorable experiences while at Michigan. Playing every year in the Great Lakes Invitational, at both Olympia and Joe Louis Arenas. Especially memorable was the GLI game in 1979 with Michigan Tech that went into triple overtime. Tim graduated from the College of Literature, Sciences and the Arts.
