The start of the 1970's saw the fraternity system as well as the university and country in the midst of great change. The Greek system at Michigan was shrinking, and in 1970 the local IFC was $11,000 in debt. In 1971 the IFC folded and the Fraternity Coordinating Council (FCC) was founded. Unlike the IFC, the FCC often called together officials such as the Presidents, Treasurers, Rush chairmen, and Social chairman from all fraternities to compare ideas and form strategies. However, the Delta Chi chapter endured this troubled time. The Michigan chapter created a Chi Delphia chapter in 1971. This organization, an intricate part of Delta Chi, was a little sisters program whose members were often members of other sororities. In fact, many Michigan Delta Chi's and Chi Delphia's became married later in life. Michigan fraternities also started up Greek Week in 1978. Delta Chi finished on the first place team in 1986, 1995, and 1998. ? There were several changes made during the '70s. In 1975, members voted to remove the fine system, in place since the founding of the chapter, in favor of a demerit system which would be in place until 1992. Electricity was added to the third floor in 1975, allowing for new rooms to be built and members began to subdivided the house into more rooms. The subdivisions lowered its capacity to 24 in 1971. Today the capacity is considered 22. Private phones were installed in every room in 1979. Membership wise, the chapter had between 15 and 20 members during the mid-70's and reached almost 30 members by 1980. Despite its large number of members, the social life of the fraternity, vibrant for most of the 1960's and 70's, deteriorated to the point where the chapter passed a resolution to have more parties during 1979-80 school year. During the earlier part of the decade, however, chapter traditions such as the awards at chapter meetings expanded to include such colorful ones as the "Donald M. Leckey Piss and Moan Award" and the "Richard T. Crane Exhibitionist of the Year Award". Studying the chapter minutes of the 1970's one can find a running battle between the chapter and IHQ chief secretary Marge Lee. As chapter announcements became more and more sexually explicit and otherwise colorful, she sent a note to the chapter saying stating her job and that she did not appreciate it. As a result (predictably), announcements of the type only increased. In some instances, announcements with no apparent meaning such as "go USMC" or "The "B" is frigid" and the "F" eats it" were printed in chapter minutes semi-weekly for several years. |
