El Centro de la Raza

University of New Mexico

The main goals of El Centro are to support Hispano/Chicano students at UNM students at UNM, provide educational, cultural, and social programming, and educate the University about the unique needs of Hispano/Chicano students. El Centro staff provide support to first-year Raza students who are receiving Bridge to Success Lottery scholarships, first generation college students, non-traditional students and students from working class or rural backgrounds. The staff particularly focuses on helping students' transition to the university environment through financial aid, career and academic advising and counseling services. El Centro also provides advocacy services for various student problems. At the center, students have access to computers, study areas, telephones and a break room. The center offers a friendly environment to help students who are living away from their families to feel more comfortable.

Two in 20 Program

University of Massachusetts-Amherst

Provides a supportive residential community to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students and their allies. Residents are committed to working together to end homophobia and heterosexism and actively participate in organizing program activities such as potluck dinners, movie nights, coffeehouses and educational workshops.
