The Dean of Students Office actively promotes a campus social life that contributes positively to the UM experience for all students. UM policies and programs are intended to promote civility, reduce the risk of harm and increase the safety and success of every student. Students need to be aware that certain behaviors related to alcohol and other drug use can lead to life-altering consequences including regretted decisions, loss academic potential, discipline, arrest and serious harm to self and others.

At UM a caring community is a critical component to realizing the mission of the university. That means encouraging others to be responsible for the health and safety of fellow students and to discourage behavior that may cause harm. That includes looking out for your friends to make sure they are safe and get help if they need it. We also strive to build a respectful community--one in which community members exhibit integrity and consideration for others. Excessive or risky drinking and resulting negative behavior can significantly affect the sense of community at UM.

As students make decisions regarding alcohol use, we encourage them to consider the consequences those choices entail. There are many resources on campus to educate students regarding the consequences of illegal and/or excessive alcohol or other drug use, and to assist them with making informed choices.
