Welcome Letter

Hello:

Welcome to the Office of the Dean of Students.

Driven by the tenets of student development theory, all of our staff work to promote individual student development and enhance the Michigan experience for all students—from entering students to advanced degree holders. We offer individual support, programs, services, co-curricular opportunities, policy development and advocacy. Our key areas of focus include campus climate and student engagement, student health and wellness, and critical incident management for personal emergencies or emergencies confronting larger groups such as those posed by Hurricane Katrina.

Recognizing that faculty and staff in other units may be the first to become aware of a student in need, we also provide and coordinate university resources and provide education and support as we partner with faculty and staff dealing with students in difficulty.

Students, faculty and staff uncertain of where to turn may work with staff who possess the knowledge and influence to solve problems. We are also available to talk with parents about university policies, practices and resources and the Michigan student experience.

The Dean of Students oversees the functional area of student life within the Division of Student Affairs. Student life is comprised of thirteen distinct units.
