E&E assists departments in selecting and designing placement tests. In addition, E&E administers these placement tests and survey questionnaires to incoming students and recommends placements for the students. Last year E&E administered more than 15,000 placement tests to more than 6000 incoming students. E&E administers and scores placement examinations for entering students at the beginning of term. These exams help student advisors and counselors place students into the appropriate entry level course in several subject areas. These currently include:

  • Chemistry
  • Math
  • French
  • Italian
  • Hebrew
  • Russian
  • Spanish

In addition, administered approximately 12,000 survey questionnaires to these students. The survey questionnaires covered high school writing experience and attitudes of college students in a variety of areas. The high school writing survey was administered for the English Composition Board; the general attitude survey was administered for the Vice-President for Student Affairs. After testing students and scoring the tests, E&E sent placement recommendations (link to an example of a placement recommendation) to sixteen counseling units on the University campus. The placement reports gave course recommendations, rationale for the recommendations, and brief descriptions of recommended courses. In addition, E&E sent academic advisors a record of the student's responses on the high school writing survey. Advisors and students were to take the writing survey results into account in selecting first writing courses for students.
