Botsford, Jay Barrett. English Society in the Eighteenth Century. New York: Octagon Book Inc., 1965. This book has information on the common sports that people were involved in during this time period. It also discusses the influences that other countries had on the recreations in England.

Collet, Peg. http://www.nb.net/~collet/ourbull.htm, April 1999. The web site gives the history of the breed of bulldogs, which were the type used in bull-baiting. It also contains information on bull-baiting.

Holt, Richard. Sport and the British: A Modern History. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1989. This book provided the majority of the background information on prize-fighting. It describes how prize-fighting became commercialized, more regulated, and who participated.

Malcolmson, Robert W. Popular Recreations in English Society 1700-1850. New York:Cambridge University Press, 1973. This book discusses the different recreational activities that the English engaged in. It includes the different types of recreation available at this time as well as the popular views for and against the activities. It discusses recreation on the basis of class, customs, gender and age groups.

Tranter, Neil. Sport, Economy and Society in Britain 1750-1914. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1998. This book talks of the conspiracy of the elites against the blood sports. It also talks about how some of the blood sports resisted these attacks, and how some declined.
