The Newgate of the 1700's is the third prison given this name; the first dated back to the 1400's. It was built in 1666 and is considered the most famous prison in England. Having only 150 cells, there are 250 prisoners including their families. Animals run rampant and not until 1792 will dogs be banned! (Byrne 25) Gambling, alcoholism, and sexual favors are popular past times. Religious services are offered. If you are wealthy, you have the opportunity to pay a fee to stay in the press yards, or otherwise known as the 'aristocratic prison'.
