Gin Lane, Hogarth c. 1751

The influence of gin is apparent everywhere in this work; "in the ruined dwellings, in the sickly looks, in the emaciated frames, trembling limbs, carious teeth, livid lips, and sunken eyes" (8) Gin has contaminated the men, women and children of this society and even killed some. To show the horrible effects of gin drinking no means are left untouched.
