LADY MONTAGU

   BY: NICOLE DEROSIA

I am the fair Lady Mary Wortley Montagu,

and I have taken great pains to writ this for you.

A woman of the first quality, head strong, strong-willed, willful,

and full of personality.

I succeed with all I do,

The accomplished Miss Montagu.

My journeys have led me across the globe.

Bringing me to many magnificent abodes.

Lavished with outstanding luxury,

many mysteries for the eye to see.

Rotterdam, Wenna, and Prague

more wealthy than a neat street sweeping maid.

Adrianople, Constantinople, and Belgrade

more healthy than the men who caught the plague.

A complexion of the fairest hue,

The very lovely Miss Montagu.

Men of the world dote and dilly.

On many occurrences I find silly.

More sure footed than the captain, pious than the priest,

I listen to the egos’ of Sultans at their many elaborate feasts.

Dressed very inconvenient, adorned, jeweled, and shaped,

A motif that is most advantageous to the figure and nape.

I sit these nights with great splendor,

only to re-count their happenings to my next sender.

An ideal women character through and through,

The honest Miss Montagu.

Undertook by few other Christians is my guess.

I seek out the religions and churches of best.

And I have found holiness in both the rich and poor,

for god graces are not measured by who has more.

Rather by the devotion of those who are true,

most humbly yours, Miss Montagu.

My countless escapades have taught me well.

And in British culture. I no longer wish to dwell.

for Turkish ways have rekindled,

a love for life that has slowly dwindled.

For excess knowledge, money, or fame,

is no more greater than passing on your name.

For when life is gone, all is dead,

if no one is left to prove what you said.

So, enjoy life’s gardens, music, and wine

and make good of god’s precious time.

For my final adieu,

I am sir etc,

The fair Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.
