SKIRT, PETTICOAT
17th c. onward
Until the 19th century, the term "skirt" was used very rarely in comparison
with the term "petticoat." The original meaning for both is the bottom
hanging part of a dress, though later on "petticoat" became identified
as an undergarment rather than outerwear. (Cunnington,
Dictionary,196.)
