This web site on marriage in eighteenth century England was created by Ani Shehigian, Karolyn Kokko, and Emily Fox as a final project for Professor David Porter's English 430 class at the University of Michigan during the fall semester, 2000.  The title of the class is "The Rise of the Novel."  Novels studied in the course included Eliza Haywood's Love in Excess, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Samuel Richardson's Pamela, William Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield, Ann Radcliffe's The Italian, and Jane Austen's Emma. In addition to studying the novels themselves, throughout the semester we have been considering the historical and social contexts in which the novel evolved. This web project has provided us with the opportunity to learn about one of these social or historical topics in depth, and share our findings with a wider audience through the web medium. "The English Bride" was completed on December 8, 2000.
