In the face of her
reputation as an advocate for equality and education, some of Mary's
literary accomplishments are overlooked.
Wollstonecraft, as a reviewer for the
Analytical, developed well thought out guidelines for what was
good travel literature as well as commentary on poetry. Her views on
poetry were published in her essay "On Poetry, and Our Relish for the
Beauties of Nature." Her theory on travel narratives were put to the
test with her own travels when she wrote Letters Written During a
Short Residence in Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
Some scholars consider Letters a
literary experiment (3)
of a groundbreaking nature.
